The Denver Broncos enter Week 7 with a 4-2 record, but their performances have been anything but consistent. While the defense has repeatedly delivered, Bo Nix and the offense have struggled to find their rhythm. Injuries have also complicated matters, forcing Denver to adjust its plans throughout the season.
One of the biggest concerns has been Patrick Surtain II. The reigning defensive star suffered an ankle injury against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4, forcing him to miss Denver's subsequent matchups against the Los Angeles Chargers and Seattle Seahawks. His absence has tested the Broncos' secondary at a crucial point in the campaign.
There is finally some positive news, however. Surtain returned to practice this week and participated on a limited basis for three consecutive days, raising hopes that he could feature against the Arizona Cardinals. Still, head coach Sean Payton isn't ready to confirm anything.
Asked about Surtain's availability, Payton refused to reveal whether the All-Pro cornerback would return on Sunday.
“We’ll see. We’ll see. We’ll see. We’re not announcing starting lineups now. Why would I do that?”
Payton's response leaves Denver's opponents guessing while keeping the final decision within the team's control. Surtain was officially listed as questionable, meaning his return remains possible but isn't guaranteed. With Arizona presenting another challenge, the Broncos will want their star cornerback fully ready before putting him back into action.
Sean Payton Demands Better Execution From Broncos' Offense
Beyond the injury concerns, Payton has stressed that Denver must improve offensively. The Broncos have won close games despite Nix's struggles, but their head coach knows that approach won't always be enough.
Payton has accepted responsibility for the offense's shortcomings and highlighted the need for better protection, a more effective running game, and more downfield opportunities.
Against Arizona, Denver will need to execute more consistently while its defense handles the challenge of containing the Cardinals. Surtain's potential return would be a major boost, but Payton's broader concern remains getting the entire team performing at a higher level.
