Sean Payton Shares How He Scouts QBs in NFL Draft

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is prioritizing scheme vision over raw talent as the 2026 NFL Draft approaches. His philosophy focuses on how a prospect fits his system rather than individual skill sets.
Payton recently gave insight into his scouting approach in an interview. According to him, identifying the ideal quarterback requires having a perfect picture of how the player would fit into the system rather than focusing solely on raw talent.
“When it comes to the quarterback position… most importantly is what’s the vision, like, how do you want to use this player to benefit him the most,” Payton said. “I think that can vary around the league.”
Beyond the scheme fit, Payton also highlighted the importance of consistent evaluation processes across the teams.
“We’re always looking at past performances… we’re always analyzing drafts,” he said.

Payton has always been known for developing quarterbacks. In the past, he worked with Drew Brees and turned him into a Hall of Fame player and a Super Bowl winner while coaching him in New Orleans.
Payton also picked Bo Nix in the 2024 draft (overall no. 12) when he was in Denver, gradually moulding him into an excellent player.
Behind Bo Nix, the Denver Broncos are thin on long-term upside, with veteran Jarrett Stidham and journeyman Sam Ehlinger rounding out the depth chart, making late-round developmental swings a logical move.
Sean Payton Has Multiple QB Options in the 2026 NFL Draft
With Sean Payton leading the process, the Denver Broncos are expected to adopt a patient attitude towards drafting a quarterback in the 2026 NFL draft.
According to Sports Illustrated analyst Erick Trickel, multiple Day 3 QBs possess athleticism and developmental potential, even though there is no top-calibre talent in this year’s QB crop.
For Trickel, one example of such a player would be Taylen Green, who is one of the players to be drafted following his impressive 2025 season in Arkansas, and has also shown his capability as a dual-threat player.
The former Boise State Broncos football and Arkansas Razorbacks football QB brings elite dual-threat upside, highlighted by a blazing 4.38-second 40 at the Combine, one of the fastest ever for a quarterback.
Trickel further argues that Sawyer Robertson brings a physical edge, a QB who runs through contact and plays with an edge, while his size-speed combo hints at a possible hybrid role if developed further.
Meanwhile, Cade Klubnik offers a different bet, his 2024 tape flashed real NFL upside, but the scheme fit raises questions, leaving Denver to weigh whether he is a system QB or a versatile piece waiting to be unlocked.
