Sean Payton is taking back the Broncos’ offensive play-calling duties after the team struggled to find consistency through the first four weeks.
Denver sits at 2-2 and is looking for answers after a disappointing Week 4 loss to the 49ers. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Payton will call the plays again when the Broncos face the Chargers in Week 5.
The move comes after Davis Webb handled those duties during the opening stretch of the season. Denver gave Webb the offensive coordinator's role during the offseason, with Payton stepping away from his previous play-calling duties. That arrangement will now change, with the Broncos' head coach returning to his previous responsibilities.
The offense showed warning signs immediately. Denver managed only 176 yards in its Week 1 loss to Kansas City. The Broncos then needed second-half rallies against Jacksonville and the Rams to ease concerns.
Week 4 brought another setback. A 3-3 halftime tie against San Francisco turned into a double-digit loss, and Florio reports that the result apparently prompted Payton to change course.
Davis Webb’s early struggles leave Broncos offense searching for answers
Davis Webb’s first season as Denver’s offensive coordinator has produced mixed results. The Broncos rank 27th in both points and total yards after four games.
Mike Florio notes that Denver entered 2026 with high expectations after finishing 14-3 last year. The Broncos are 2-2, leaving little room for another offensive slump.
Webb will still have a role, but Payton will resume calling the plays. The shift reflects Denver’s urgency after its slow start to the season.
