The Denver Broncos entered the 2026 season hoping to build on last year's success, but their performances have raised fresh concerns. Despite a 4-2 record, the offense has struggled to find consistency, leaving quarterback Bo Nix under increasing scrutiny.
Nix's recent performances have been particularly concerning. Against the Seattle Seahawks, he completed 17 of 27 passes for just 107 yards without a touchdown, as Denver relied on its defense and a late field goal to escape with victory. His struggles to generate explosive plays and maintain offensive rhythm have prompted questions about whether he should remain the Broncos' starting quarterback.
However, head coach Sean Payton isn't entertaining that possibility. During his latest press conference, Payton was asked whether he was considering a change under center. His response left little room for speculation.
"I said this a week ago, to answer your question, no."
Payton's firm stance signals that Nix retains the coaching staff's confidence despite his recent struggles. The quarterback still has time to rediscover his form, but Denver needs considerably more production from its offense if it hopes to compete with the AFC's strongest teams.
Sean Payton Takes Responsibility for the Broncos QB's struggles
Payton also addressed questions about who deserves blame for Nix's disappointing performances. Rather than placing the responsibility solely on his quarterback, the Broncos coach pointed toward himself and the coaching staff.
"That starts with me and us."
The statement suggests Payton believes the coaching staff must find better ways to help Nix succeed. That could mean simplifying certain reads, improving play design, or creating more opportunities for the quarterback to attack downfield.
With Denver still winning games, Payton has little reason to panic. However, the Broncos need their offense to improve quickly. Supporting Nix and restoring his confidence will be crucial if Denver wants to turn a promising record into a genuine championship push.
