The Denver Broncos head to Arizona for a Week 7 matchup against the Cardinals, hoping to build on their 4-2 start. However, their record masks a major concern: an offense that has struggled to sustain drives and consistently support its defense.
Bo Nix threw for just 107 yards in Denver's overtime victory over Seattle, while the offense managed only 30 yards after halftime. With the Cardinals coming off an impressive defensive performance against the Los Angeles Rams, Payton knows his team cannot afford another afternoon of missed opportunities.
Arizona disrupted Matthew Stafford and the Rams by knocking their offense out of rhythm. Payton acknowledged that challenge during his latest press conference, warning that Denver must prepare carefully for the Cardinals' defensive approach.
"They were problematic for the Rams. They were able to take a really good offense and a good quarterback and maybe put them out of rhythm. And so we're gonna have to have the right answers."
Payton's comments underline the importance of preparation and adjustments. Denver must find ways to protect Nix, establish its running game, and create opportunities for explosive plays. If Arizona can disrupt the Broncos' timing, their defensive strength could once again be wasted by offensive struggles.
Sean Payton Admits Broncos' Offense Still Has Work to Do
Payton recently assessed his play-calling after taking back those responsibilities from offensive coordinator Davis Webb. Despite consecutive victories, he admitted the offense remains a work in progress, particularly after its second-half collapse against Seattle.
The Broncos went three-and-out repeatedly after halftime, highlighting the need for better adjustments and execution. Payton has also accepted responsibility for helping Nix improve, stressing that the quarterback's progress depends on the entire offense performing better.
Arizona presents another opportunity to make those improvements. If Denver can deliver four consistent quarters, it can strengthen its winning record and demonstrate that its offense is finally moving in the right direction.
