The Denver Broncos finally saw Sean Payton reclaim play-calling duties in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers. After struggling under first-year play-caller Davis Webb, Denver needed a strong response to get its offense back on track.
The Broncos secured an important victory, but quarterback Bo Nix still has areas to improve. While Denver showed signs of progress, Nix struggled to produce consistently through the air, making protection and decision-making important concerns moving forward.
Payton acknowledged that the offense still needs work despite the positive result. The head coach specifically highlighted pass protection, explaining that Denver must give Nix a clean pocket early in games to prevent him from feeling rushed.
"I think it's important from a protection standpoint that early in games we provide that clean pocket so that clock doesn't get juiced up a little bit," Payton said.
Payton also noted that Nix has started settling down his footwork. However, the Broncos must protect their quarterback better if they want him to trust the pocket, read defenses and execute plays consistently.
The win offered an encouraging start to Payton's return to play-calling. Now, Denver must build on that performance and give Nix the conditions he needs to succeed.
Sean Payton Wants Bo Nix to Play With Greater Confidence
Payton has also encouraged Nix to trust his instincts and play with greater confidence. The coach wants his quarterback to take advantage of opportunities instead of rushing through his progressions or relying too heavily on improvisation.
Nix completed 16 of 27 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers, while also losing a fumble. Those numbers underline why Denver needs better protection and more consistent quarterback play.
With Payton back in charge, the Broncos have an opportunity to improve their offensive identity. The next step is turning that victory into sustained progress.
