The Sean Payton-led Denver Broncos may have a big financial dilemma going on before the season. Nose tackle D.J. Jones' cap hit is beginning to create difficult long-term issues for Denver's front office and salary cap.

Jones $12.49 million base salary plus roster pushes the cap charge to $14.57 million. Therefore, it makes Jones one of the most expensive players on the defensive roster, as per Sports Illustrated.

While Jones is locked in for the 2026 season since his money is guaranteed, Denver could save about $9.8 million in cap space by moving on from him after the season.

Denver is preparing for future financial commitments elsewhere on the roster. QB Bo Nix might request for a large extension after leading the team to the AFC Championship last year.

On the other hand, defensive players like Zach Allen, Nik Bonitto and Pat Surtain may also ask for huge contract extensions.

Keeping Jones at a premium salary beyond 2026 may become difficult for the front office. They generally want to retain their younger defensive lineman, who could prove their capability of handling the larger roles.

Jones has been a reliable player for the Broncos for the past four years. He has recorded 287 total tackles, 12.0 sacks, six forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries across his 109 career regular-season games.

The Broncos have also invested in younger players such as Sai'vion Jones, Eyioma Uwazurike, and Tyler Onyedim, all of whom could influence Denver's future roster.

If those players develop during training camp, the franchise can feel more comfortable turning away from expensive veterans. Denver clearly value Jones, but the organization knows difficult cap decisions often define championship-caliber teams.

Broncos Have Quietly Found Their Next Offensive Weapon

The Denver Broncos have added Boise State's guard Kage Casey in their offensive linemen room, who continues to create buzz following the 2026 NFL Draft.

Mile High Reports state that the fourth-round pick could outperform his draft position quickly. He arrives in Denver with a record of zero sacks during the 2024 season while earning All-Mountain West honors.

His versatility is what makes him valuable for Payton and offensive line coach Zach Strief. The former Broncos' athlete could play tackle, guard, and potentially center if needed.

The Broncos already have one of the stronger offensive lined led by Quin Meinerz and Garrett Bolles. However, Payton knows the importance of maintaining long-term protection for Nix. Potentially, Casey could become one of Denver's best moves in this year's draft.
