Denver is heading straight into mandatory minicamp, and the pressure is mounting on HC Sean Payton. The Broncos coach is facing backlash from local media over the offseason injury status of QB Bo Nix.

“I’m a little p***** at Sean Payton for, earlier this year, saying what he said about Bo Nix. It was, ‘Great!’ Sunshine and rainbows. And then, there’s a second surgery," 104.3 Denver Sports’ Cecil Lammey said. "...Then, we’ve got the Broncos calling each and every one of us to tell us, ‘Oh, no! This is what happened."

Payton might have backed this entire organization into a tight corner with his recent public comments. He confidently implied that everyone would see Nix in an expanded role during these mandatory June sessions.

But this has created an immediate timeline benchmark that the rookie's recovering ankle might not hit. This aggressive projection triggered major pushback from local analysts who track the team daily.

"I’m sick of that. Sean, get it right. Get it right. Be honest or be so damn general with it that we just don't know," Cecil Lammey voiced his frustration with the team's PR approach.

Looking at the injury timeline, Nix originally fractured his right ankle back on January 17, 2026, during Denver's postseason overtime victory against Buffalo.

After an initial corrective surgery in January, the young QB silently underwent a secondary "cleanup" medical procedure this past April to fully address lingering issues.

The Broncos had a great 14-3 record last season with Bo Nix under centre. He was absolutely crucial to everything they did, racking up 3,931 passing yards and 25 passing TDs.

Plus, the 26-year-old added five rushing TDs, proving he's the engine driving Denver's entire offense forward.

So the dissatisfaction at the HC over the uncertainty of Nix's injury and the subsequent recovery was obvious.

Sean Payton's June Projections Raise the Stakes for Bo Nix's Health

The core issue stems back to June 4, 2026, when Payton publicly downplayed any rehabilitation concerns.

"You don’t see the pre-practice, but he’s been throwing. I do think in our third week, when you guys are out here… you’ll see more of a roll," Sean Payton had stated earlier.

If Nix is unable to fully participate next week, Payton's optimistic public statements could quickly transform into fear.

Cecil Lammey stressed the importance of keeping the signal-caller healthy on the field during his radio show.

"Bo, get it right. Get out there and then stay right. Do not be injury-prone. Availability is a skill. Bo Nix is a franchise quarterback," Lammey further stated.
