Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II is making headlines again in 2026. One of the best cornerbacks in the league has received a $5 million raise through a contract adjustment, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. With a new deal in hand, Surtain isn't shying away from lofty expectations.
The raise was expected as Surtain's market value has continued to increase over the years. Now, he is aiming to achieve more success.
"It's a new slate," Surtain said in an interview with 9NEWS Sports Denver on June 3. "Teams are getting better and better, but we have to find a way to get better than we were last year. Obviously, we fell a little short last year, so we definitely have high hopes and aspirations coming up."
Surtain is already challenging himself to reach another level, since he can also unlock up to $5 million in extra compensation in 2027 with a Pro Bowl or All-Pro selection. The cornerback already has two-time first-team All-Pro honors and four Pro Bowler honors after five seasons in the league.
Surtain signed a four-year deal, worth $96 million, including $77.5 million guaranteed and $40.6 million guaranteed at signing, per Spotrac.
Given his production and consistency, he can easily earn those additional incentives if he stays healthy the whole season.
Renowned for his ability to shut down top receivers, he has recorded 12 interceptions, 59 passes defended, and 279 tackles during his career. He finished the 2025 season with 47 total tackles, 12 passes defended, and one interception.
Pat Surtain Stays Committed To a Long-Term Future in Denver
Surtain's interview also captured his dedication to the Broncos. He said that he did not think of skipping the team's offseason program if a reworked deal wasn't finalized.
Surtain received a well-earned pay bump before the 2026 season, though he admitted the news didn't surprise him.
"We talked about it a little bit," he said. "It's a testament to ownership and the Broncos as an organization. We talked about it honestly. You know, I want to be here, I want to be a Bronco. They heavily invested in me as much as I'm invested into them."
While Surtain's raise reflects his value to the franchise, Denver's focus is on last season's progress.
The Broncos worked on their roster this offseason with major moves to strengthen the team around their core players. Expectations have risen as Denver hopes to emerge as a contender in the AFC.
It has been a busy offseason for the Broncos, managing major roster additions while rewarding key players such as Surtain.
Will Surtain be able to meet the expectations he has set for himself? Share your thoughts.
