The Denver Broncos have officially secured their top draft selections in the defensive line, reaching an agreement on a four-year rookie contract with Tyler Onyedim, but one financial portion stands out.
The deal was first noted by the Denver Post's Luca Evans after the third-round pick out of Texas A&M was brought in following a draft-day trade that moved Denver out of the second round.
"Note on this: no guaranteed base salary for #Broncos' No. 66 pick Tyler Onyedim in his rookie deal, per source." Evans' X post read. "Onyedim and a few other top-of-third-round rookies were looking up at Carson Beck's negotiations with #Cardinals at No. 65."
Selected 66th overall, Onyedim’s contract is valued at $7,385,370 in total base salary across four seasons, per Spotrac.
According to Broncos Wire, Onyedim arrives in Denver after spending four years at Iowa State before transferring to Texas A&M for his final college season.
In 13 games last year, he finished with 48 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.
With John Franklin-Myers no longer in the mix, there's also an open spot in the rotation that Onyedim and others like Sai’vion Jones and Eyioma Uwazurike will look to fill.
With his signing complete, Denver now has all seven of its 2026 draft picks under contract, with the rookie set to report together when training camp begins in late July. In fact, the soon-to-be rookie is already being hyped up for the season ahead by the franchise GM.
Tyler Onyedim receives major praise ahead of training camp
The former Texas A&M standout was one of three defensive players selected by Denver in the 2026 NFL Draft and is expected to compete for snaps along a defensive front that lost John Franklin-Myers earlier this offseason.
Broncos general manager George Paton said that the team liked what it saw from Onyedim after his transfer to Texas A&M, where he was able to play a more aggressive role than he did at Iowa State.
“At Iowa State, they were playing him in a different scheme,” Paton said as per Si.com after the draft on May 22. “He got to see and do more at A&M, which he’ll be doing here. The tape was good at Iowa State, but we really liked it at A&M.”
While much of the attention during offseason workouts went elsewhere, veteran defensive end Zach Allen revealed that Onyedim has already made a positive impression.
“He’s got the hard part kind of done,” Allen told reporters on June 11. “You could definitely tell he’s got the physical traits, and then he’s got a good attitude about it. He’s always trying to learn, always asking questions.”
With training camp approaching, the Broncos appear eager to see how quickly the rookie can turn those early impressions into production on the field.
