NFL Fans Pay Tribute As Russell Wilson Announces Retirement

Veteran QB Russel Wilson's NFL journey has come to an end. He announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from football after 14 seasons, while also revealing his next move. Wilson will join CBS Sports and become a part of The NFL Today coverage team.

He ended his 14-year run that included a Super Bowl title, 10 Pro Bowl selections, and stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New York Giants.

“As I enter this next chapter with CBS Sports and ‘The NFL Today,’ I’m so blessed to continue doing what I love most, being around the greatest game in the world,” Wilson said on Wednesday via X.

Selected in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Wilson became Seattle’s starting quarterback and helped lead the team to its first Super Bowl championship.

He finished his career with 46,966 passing yards, 353 touchdown passes, and a place among the most accomplished quarterbacks of his generation.

Wilson, in the retirement video, also included a heartfelt message to former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.

“Thanks for taking a chance on a young, 5'11 Black kid from Richmond, Virginia, that was told he was too small to ever make it in the NFL,” Wilson said on Wednesday.

With his playing days now behind him, Wilson begins a new chapter while closing the book on one of the most accomplished quarterback careers of the past.

For some, the focus was on Wilson's accomplishments and longevity. After winning a Super Bowl, earning 10 Pro Bowl selections, and spending more than a decade as one of the league's most recognizable quarterbacks, many felt his career spoke for itself.

One fan wrote on X, “What an Epic MVP and HOF career he had! Enjoy the next chapter have some fun stop taking all those hits.”

Others pointed to the consistency Wilson maintained throughout his time in the league and the respect he earned both on and off the field.

“10x Pro Bowler, champion, and always a class act on and off the field. Smart move heading to the CBS booth,” another fan commented on X.

Several reactions also centered on Wilson's year in Seattle, where he helped lead the team to its first Super Bowl title and became one of the faces of the organization.

“Legendary career, Russ. From that magical Super Bowl run with the Legion of Boom to the scrambles and ‘Let Russ Cook’ era — you gave us unforgettable moments,” one fan posted on X.

As tributes continued to pour in, many shared a similar message, celebrating Wilson's impact on the game.

“What a career, Russ!! One of the best deep throwers the game has seen. SB champion, leader, and a true class act, wishing you nothing but the best.”

As Wilson begins is broadcasting career, fan reactions showed that his impact was across multiple generations of NFL followers.
