Going to Be Hard: George Paton Outlines Expectations for 2026 Draft Class Ahead of Draft Weekend

Apr 23, 2026, 12:30 PM CUT

The Denver Broncos aren't looking for starters in this year's draft; they're looking for survivors. Coming off a 14-3 season that ended in the AFC Championship Game, most of the roster is returning. Moreover, with Bo Nix being healthy, the team already looks settled in key spots.

Talking at the pre-draft conference last week, Broncos general manager George Paton said early playing time will not be easy to earn.

“We typically like to draft high-trait players. Maybe they lack a little bit of polish, and it’s going to take some development."

That message reflects Denver’s current position. After keeping most of their roster and adding Jaylen Waddle through a trade, there are no clear gaps forcing rookies into immediate roles.

"Sure, we’d like somebody to come in and start right away, but that’s not always realistic. With the way our team is built now, it’s going to be hard to come in and start Day 1,” the Broncos' GM concluded.

This clearly depicts that the Broncos are looking at long-term development. Playing time in 2026 will likely come through rotation or injuries rather than fixed starting roles.

The Broncos have seven picks in this draft, giving them chances to add depth across the roster. Their plan will become clearer once they are on the clock.

What Positions Should the Broncos Prioritize in the Draft?

The Denver Broncos may not have urgent gaps, but several positions still need attention as the roster ages and depth becomes a factor.

According to Jon Heath from Denver Wire, there are several spots that need the Broncos' attention.

Tight end is one of the main areas. Evan Engram will turn 32 this season and did not have a strong first year. So the team may look to develop a younger option behind him.

Running back is another concern. The run game took a hit after J.K. Dobbins got injured last season, which exposed the lack of depth in that unit.

On the defensive line, the Broncos are moving on from John Franklin-Myers. Sai’vion Jones and Eyioma Uwazurike are in-house options, but the team may still add another player to that group.

Inside linebacker also needs planning. Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad are both returning but are getting older, which makes a developmental addition a sensible move.

At offensive tackle, Garett Bolles, turning 34 next month, is still playing at a high level, but the team could start preparing for the future at that position.

The Broncos’ draft is focused on adding depth and planning. These picks are aimed at supporting a roster that is already close to competing.
