Former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has already issued a challenge to No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. Rather than protecting his place in franchise history, Carr said he hopes the rookie eventually surpasses everything he accomplished in Las Vegas.

Speaking at a charity golf event on July 9, Carr endorsed Mendoza and said he hopes the young quarterback breaks all of his Raiders passing records, setting a lofty benchmark for the franchise's new face under center.

“I love him, man. I hope he breaks all my records,” Derek Carr said about Mendoza as per media outlet Raiders Lead's post on X.

Carr's message effectively set the benchmark for Mendoza for him to surpass the standard established by the franchise's all-time passing leader.

Carr showed pure class to Mendoza, reported by Raiders Lead on X, with whom he shares personal beliefs and common faith.

At the end of his nine seasons with the Silver and Black, Carr ranked at the very top of franchise QB metrics.

He accumulated 35,222 passing yards, 217 touchdowns, and threw 99 interceptions as per Pro Football Reference. A huge part of his success came down to Head Coach Jon Gruden's explosive, modern passing offense.

Gruden is one of the most offense-minded coaches in NFL history, as per Justin Churchill of A to Z Sports. The fact that Derek Carr played in the modern era also helped his passing statistics.

But take nothing away from Derek Carr, as the second on the franchise's QB list for passing yardage and TDs is Ken Stabler with just 19,078 yards and 150 TDs. Stabler also had way more picks than Carr at 143 INTs.

Mendoza's arrival marks a new era for the Las Vegas Raiders, with 2025's Heisman Trophy Winner expected to become the franchise QB in the coming seasons.

While Carr has challenged Mendoza to surpass his achievements, the rookie could also benefit from circumstances that his predecessor rarely enjoyed in Las Vegas.

The key factor setting Fernando Mendoza apart from Derek Carr

In Carr’s time with the Raiders, he wasn't given a top-tier defense to work with, as per Justin Churchill of A to Z Sports.

"That’s not an excuse for his failure to get the job done in the postseason, but it is a relevant factor," Churchill noted. "The Raiders consistently asked Carr to outscore opponents rather than lean on a dominant defensive unit, and that’s a difficult way to sustain winning."

If Raiders general manager John Spytek and current HC Klint Kubiak can build a strong defense, Mendoza won't face those problems.

For now, Mendoza will start by fixing the team's turnover problem that has persisted since Derek Carr left, per Sports Illustrated's Carter Landis.

QB Geno Smith threw 17 picks in 15 starts during a rough 2025 NFL season, which saw the Raiders finish with a 3-14 record. Mendoza is much better at protecting the ball.

He only threw 12 interceptions over his last two college seasons combined, posting a 2.6% turnover-worthy play rate per Pro Football Focus. This ball security will let him finish drives cleanly.

Carr has already made it clear that he wants Mendoza to rewrite the Raiders' record book. Now, the rookie's challenge is to turn that vote of confidence into a career that surpasses the franchise quarterback who came before him.
