ESPN Names Broncos' Best Trade Move & It's Not the Jaylen Waddle Deal

The Denver Broncos focused heavily on offense this season, trying to surround a recovering Bo Nix with players who can provide the support he needs. They traded their No. 30 first-round pick to the Dolphins in exchange for their star wide receiver, Jaylen Waddle.

However, ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell believes that the Broncos made an even better deal by re-signing J.K. Dobbins. Denver extended the running back’s contract for two years, starting at a $16 million base amount.

Comparing their stats and cost, the analyst found Dobbins’ deal to be better than the trade for Waddle.

“Best re-signing: J.K. Dobbins," Barnwell wrote. "If you needed any healthy running back to take 15 handoffs in a game, Dobbins wouldn't be anybody's first pick, but he shouldn't be far off."

Compared to Waddle’s three-year, $84.75 million contract, Dobbins’ $16 million feels like a pittance. Additionally, the Broncos also gave up their No. 30 first-round pick, No. 94 third-round pick, and No. 130 fourth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

So, all things considered, Barnwell felt that the franchise gave away much more to gain the Dolphins' WR than they did to keep their RB.

What are Waddle and Dobbins contributing to the Denver Broncos team?

Both Jaylen Waddle and J.K. Dobbins have proved themselves to be reliable players who can keep up with Broncos HC Sean Payton’s balanced approach to plays.

Especially with the team’s starting quarterback still on the mend, the Broncos have been filling their ranks with talent that can take some of the pressure off Nix after his return to the field.

Waddle was drafted sixth overall by the Miami Dolphins during the 2021 NFL draft and has proved himself consistently ever since.

In his rookie season, he held the record for most interceptions by a rookie, got inducted into the PFWA All-Rookie Team, and won the Miami Dolphins Team MVP. He has over 5,000 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns across five seasons with the Dolphins.

Dobbins is another elite player with multiple accolades to his name. Drafted 55th overall by the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, he broke the rookie record for most rushing touchdowns.

He is also well-known for his consistency and efficiency on the field, a quality he has maintained across six seasons.

Although the team’s current roster is already quite WR-heavy, Waddle’s presence makes the offense formidable.

But Dobbins has an even bigger impact on the running back lineup. His experience and familiarity with the team make him an asset who can inspire rookies and provide leadership.
