Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix just grabbed a major offseason honor ahead of the 2026 season. On June 7, 2026, the Alabama Sports Writers Association named him the 2025 Professional Athlete of the Year.

It's a big push for the signal-caller, who is currently playing under a fully guaranteed $18.6 million rookie contract. The award is given to the best pro athlete with deep ties to the state of Alabama. Nix was a star at Pinson Valley High School and played three seasons at Auburn.

His winning it this year shows how far Nix has come since entering the league. The Broncos selected him as the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which was met with some skepticism.

Many draft experts openly questioned whether his game would actually translate to the professional level. Nix was the last QB to be drafted from the first round.

During that draft cycle, critics did not hold back their doubts about the quarterback.

"It feels like Denver could have gotten more value here," analysts explicitly stated, as reported by the Montgomery Advertiser. "Nix has the most to prove out of the five quarterbacks selected in the first round."

But Nix quickly made the doubters go silent with an awesome rookie campaign at Denver. The ultimate validation came in Week 10 of his first pro season after a matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Superstar QB Patrick Mahomes walked up to Broncos head coach Sean Payton to give his opinion on Broncos' No. 10.

"You got one," Mahomes pointed directly at the young QB and told Payton.

That simple praise from a three-time Super Bowl champion completely shifted the narrative. It proved that the Broncos' coaching staff made the right choice by investing their future in Bo Nix with that $18.6 million contract.

From Historic On-Field Stats to Personal Milestones Off the Field

The numbers back up the hype. In 2024, Nix accumulated 3,375 passing yards and 29 TDs. This helped Denver get to the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

He followed that up in 2025 with 3,391 passing yards and 25 TDs, guiding the Broncos to a stellar 14-3 record as the starting quarterback. Thus proving that he was no one-season wonder.

However, his sophomore season ended with a major setback. During a 33-30 playoff win against the Buffalo Bills, Nix suffered a broken ankle on the second-to-last play.

The injury required immediate surgery, forcing him to miss the AFC Championship game and focus entirely on rehab during the 2026 offseason.

Off the field, Nix welcomed his daughter, Riley Belle, on February 25, 2026.

"I've been doubted. I've been dismissed. And I have my fair share of critics...," Nix stated, writing to his baby girl on The Players' Tribune about overcoming critics. "My relationship with Jesus Christ, however, is not (fragile). He is my identity… I play for a higher purpose."

Bo Nix shared how he competes for everything and doesn't play for approval. That his value isn't bound by stats, or depth charts, and injury reports.

It is this mindset that has proved to be his best friend on and off the field. Nix hasn't returned to full practice just yet, but the Broncos will be banking on him to lead them from under center once he's back.

Do you think he will lead the Denver Broncos to a Super Bowl run in 2026?
