The Denver Broncos have retained GM George Paton on a five-year extension deal. The extension keeps Paton in his role through the 2030 season. CEO and owner Greg Penner made an official statement to address the matter.
"We are pleased to announce a new five-year contract for George Paton that reflects our confidence in his leadership, vision, and the overall direction of our team," said Penner, according to The Denver Post.
Penner also emphasized Paton's commitment to roster building and his strong partnership with head coach Sean Payton.
While speaking about his experience working with Paton, Penner said that he has enjoyed working over the past four seasons and believes they share the same vision for the long-term success of the Broncos.
However, the 56-year-old's career began in 1997 with the Chicago Bears as a scouting intern. He gradually moved through ranks to finally land the position of Broncos General Manager in 2021. In between two decades, he also worked with the Miami Dolphins from 2001 and the Minnesota Vikings from 2007 to 2020.
Details regarding the development of this new deal happened over the past two weeks after the NFL draft concluded. His past connections with Minnesota also linked him to the Vikings' dismissal of GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in late January.
Paton's strategic decisions have consistently improved the Broncos' roster depth.
George Paton's Best Moves For The Broncos
Several of Paton's decisions have had a notable impact on the Broncos, including trading off rights for head coach Sean Payton, according to Brandon Walker of USA Today's Broncos Wire.
To get Payton on board, they gave away their first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft and a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. The trade gave Denver access to a Super Bowl-winning coach who went on to post a .627 winning percentage with the team
Paton also drafted QB Bo Nix and Pat Surtain II during his tenure. Nix ensured that Denver made it to the playoffs in each of the first two seasons. The team saw similar success with the earlier selection of cornerback Pat Surtain II.
Surtain has been quite an asset for the Broncos. He was voted team MVP by Denver’s PFWA chapter three straight years (2022–2024). He also became the first Bronco in history to record double-digit passes defended in each of his first four seasons.
The Broncos are looking to build on last season's 14-3 record, first-place finish in the AFC West, and the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
