The Denver Broncos are making a major offensive change after a frustrating start to the 2026 season. Sean Payton has reclaimed play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb, hoping to address the problems that have plagued the unit through its first four weeks.
Denver has struggled to find consistency, particularly when creating explosive plays and establishing a balanced attack. Payton's decision puts the head coach back in direct control of the offense as the Broncos look to get more out of quarterback Bo Nix.
The move also leaves Webb adjusting to a significant change in responsibilities. The media recently heard from him for the first time since Payton announced his decision, giving the young coach an opportunity to address the situation.
Webb struck a positive tone, revealing that he and Payton had a productive conversation. While he acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, his focus quickly shifted toward how the entire team would respond.
"We had a productive talk on Monday. I know I mentioned it yesterday, we talked about an hour," Webb said. "I know it wasn't probably easy for him, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how we respond this week."
Rather than dwell on losing play-calling duties, Webb wants the Broncos to turn the change into motivation. Their response on the field will matter far more than any individual coaching responsibility.
Sean Payton Still Believes Davis Webb Can Become an NFL Head Coach
Payton's decision does not necessarily signal a loss of faith in Webb's long-term potential. The Broncos head coach recently expressed confidence that Webb could become an NFL head coach someday, showing that he still sees promise in his young assistant.
For now, Payton believes the offense needs a different approach to improve its immediate results. Reclaiming play-calling gives him direct control, while Webb can continue learning and contributing in his coordinator role.
The coming weeks will test both coaches. Payton must get the offense moving, while Webb and the rest of the staff must help the Broncos respond to the change.
