The Denver Broncos’ offense has come under increasing scrutiny following a disappointing loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
While much of the attention has focused on Davis Webb's play-calling, questions have also emerged about Nix’s execution. Troy Renck of The Denver Post shared ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky’s analysis, where the former NFL quarterback argued that the problems against San Francisco did not solely rest on Webb.
Orlovsky highlighted several opportunities for chunk gains that the Broncos QB1 failed to take advantage of. The ESPN analyst explained that the key question involved why Nix was not attacking downfield when the offense created those opportunities:
"And when you watch the tape, I think the question for him and Davis Webb — cuz its not on Davis Webb — this game is — why aren't you throwing the ball downfield when I'm creating the chunk throws."
Renck made a similar observation, noting that Webb had created big-play opportunities that Nix did not capitalize on. The analysis puts greater responsibility on the team's QB1 to make the most of those chances.
Davis Webb has taken heat as Broncos offense struggles
Davis Webb has faced considerable scrutiny since taking over Denver’s play-calling duties. The Broncos’ offensive struggles have naturally placed pressure on the first-year play-caller to find solutions.
However, the latest criticism suggests the problems extend beyond Webb. Troy Renck’s assessment and Dan Orlovsky’s analysis both point toward quarterback execution as another factor in Denver’s offensive issues.
The ESPN analyst specifically argued that Webb should not take all the blame for the San Francisco game. Instead, he emphasized the need for Nix to capitalize when the offense creates opportunities downfield.
