After 12 NFL seasons, LB Khalil Mack remains one of the league's most accomplished defenders without a postseason victory. According to one NFL analyst, that puts more on the line for the Chargers star than anyone else on the roster entering 2026.

After contemplating retirement for the past few years, Mack has re-signed with the Chargers on a one-year, $18 million contract. The 35-year-old made The Athletic's list of NFL players with the most on the line, according to analyst Daniel Popper.

"He has mulled retirement numerous times over the past four years. This could be his last shot at finally earning that postseason win — and a Super Bowl ring," Daniel Popper wrote.

After tenures with the Oakland Raiders, Chicago Bears and now the Chargers, Mack has been a nine-time Pro Bowler to go with three-time first-team All-Pro honors. He also won the Defensive Player of the Year award for his 2016 season with the Raiders.

Popper believes Mack's decision to continue playing is driven by one unfinished goal: finally experiencing postseason success after an otherwise Hall of Fame-caliber career.

Mack has accumulated 662 combined tackles, 113.0 sacks and 148 tackles for loss in 179 regular-season games over a 12-year career. But team success has still eluded him.

"Team success is the only thing missing from his Hall of Fame résumé. It’s the only reason he continues to play at this age," The Athletic's Popper noted. "Mack has yet to win a playoff game in his career."

Khalil Mack has reached the postseason on five occasions in the 2016, 2018, 2022, 2024 and 2025 seasons. However, his win-loss record reads 0-5 in the playoffs. Most recently, he featured in the Chargers' 3-16 playoff loss against the New England Patriots in January 2026.

Now, Mack gets another opportunity to rewrite that part of his legacy alongside head coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback Justin Herbert.

While Mack will have his personal goals in mind, his main focus will be to contribute to the Chargers as best he can.

Mack's absence in 2025 due to an elbow injury exposed the defense. The Chargers defense ranked 17th without him and 6th with him in Expected Points Added per play, as per The Athletic's Daniel Popper.

Earlier this month in July 2026, Popper also ranked Mack as the Chargers' fifth most important player, citing not only his on-field production but also his influence inside the locker room.

As per Chargers.com's Eric Smith, Mack's mentorship has already paid dividends. Playing alongside the veteran, EDGE Tuli Tuipulotu recorded 13 sacks and 20 tackles for loss in 2025 before earning a place in ESPN's Top 100.

Mack is now expected to provide similar guidance to first-round pick EDGE Akheem Mesidor.

"There's a lot of intangibles there, man, Mack said of Mesidor earlier in the offseason, as per Smith. "I'm excited to see him with the pads on."

As Mack enters what could be the final season of his career, the Chargers will be counting on both his production and leadership to help turn years of individual success into the postseason breakthrough that has long eluded him.
