Broncos sign former Browns defensive back after camp tryout

The Denver Broncos have added another defensive back after giving veteran Sam Webb a chance during Thursday's free agent workout. According to Pro Football Talk, Webb earned a spot on Denver's 90-man roster following the tryout.

"Defensive back Sam Webb tried out for the Broncos on Thursday, and he’ll be sticking around Denver for a while," Josh Alper wrote on Pro Football Talk on July 31.

The move comes after rookie cornerback Blake Cotton suffered a hamstring injury during Wednesday's opening ramp-up practice.

Cotton missed Thursday's session, and according to Chris Tomasson of the Colorado Springs Gazette, he is expected to be waived with an injury settlement, according to PFT.

Webb, now 28, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and has spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, and Cleveland Browns.

Another defensive back, Ricardo Hallman, also worked out for Denver on Thursday but did not receive a contract.

Webb now joins a crowded Broncos secondary that already features Pat Surtain II, Riley Moss, Ja'Quan McMillian, Jahdae Barron, and Kris Abrams-Draine.

Training camp and the preseason will allow him to either compete for a roster spot or earn a place on Denver's practice squad.

Now that he's officially in Denver, the focus shifts from earning the contract to proving he belongs on the roster.

What does Sam Webb bring to the Broncos' secondary?

Before making it to the NFL, Webb stood out at Missouri Western, where he earned First-Team All-MIAA honors.

His 4.48-second 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine also caught attention, with NFL Media projecting him as a possible sixth-round pick.

"Press corner with prototypical height, weight and length that should garner some attention from traits-hungry general managers," NFL analyst Lance Zierlein wrote in Sam Webb's scouting profile.

Last season with Cleveland, he appeared in seven games, recording eight tackles and returning a fumble 47 yards for a touchdown.

Across 36 career games with five starts, Webb has a total of 45 tackles, one pass breakup, one forced fumble, and one defensive touchdown.

"He can press and crowd receivers off the snap but needs to improve his technique and trust it a little more often to keep from drawing penalties down the field," Zierlein added. "His transition and footwork can be too sloppy from off coverage, so scheme fit will matter for him."

Webb's tryout earned him a contract, but training camp will decide whether it becomes something more. If he can make an impression over the next few weeks, he will have a chance to extend his NFL journey.
