During the NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos added a new running back who, in order to make his major wish come true, has to make a deal with veteran Evan Engram.
According to Jon Heath of Broncos Wire, RB Jonah Coleman might pay Evan Engram to get the No. 1 jersey number for himself.
“Unless Coleman can strike a deal with Engram and convince the tight end to change numbers again, the rookie running back won't be able to wear No. 1 this season,” wrote Heath.
Jonah Coleman played for the Washington Huskies in 2024 and 2025 and recorded 1,696 rushing yards and 23 TDs during that time. However, he wore jersey No. 1 there, which he won’t be able to wear again with the Broncos, as that jersey is worn by two-time Pro Bowler Evan Engram.
TE Evan Engram joined the Broncos last season, signing a two-year, $23 million deal, where he chose the No. 1 jersey, unlike his college days when he used to wear No. 17.

He also recorded 50 receptions for 461 yards and 1 TD for the team last season. So, it might be difficult for Coleman to continue wearing No. 1, but not impossible if he can pay and make a deal with the TE.
At the University of Arizona, Coleman wore No. 3, but that number is currently taken by the Broncos kicker Wil Lutz. Then there’s No. 24, a number once worn by Hall of Fame CB Champ Bailey and later retired in his honor.
Looking further back, Coleman also wore No. 2 in high school, but that belongs to All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II in Denver. And No. 33, another of his old numbers, is currently held by CB Jaden Robinson, who spent last season on the practice squad.
However, if he doesn’t get one of his old jersey numbers, he could always choose from the available jersey numbers: 5, 6, 20, and 30. And it seems he has already chosen one.
Latest Update on Coleman’s Jersey Number in the Broncos
As per the newest revelation, there could be another path the RB might take this offseason.
Coleman posted an edited photo of himself wearing the No. 5 jersey with the Broncos on his Instagram on April 30. This suggests that he may have made a final decision to wear No. 5, but there has been no official announcement.
That being said, the rookie minicamp is not far away, so an official confirmation of Coleman’s number isn’t far off either.
