The Denver Broncos and Patrick Surtain II have watched the cornerback market explode in recent years. Now, Christian Gonzalez has set a new standard after signing a massive deal with the New England Patriots.

Gonzalez's contract makes him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. Surtain knows what that feels like, having previously held the title after signing a four-year, $96 million deal in 2024.

Several players have since surpassed that figure. Now, Surtain has reacted to Gonzalez's new contract and what it could mean for his own future.

"Yeah, I mean, I just think that's, you know, what the market is now. You know, everybody's going to jump the market, but, you know, it's well deserved. Hell of a player. And you know, he's one of those guys that I definitely look at, uh, you know, and watch him on; you know, it's well deserved. So, congrats to him, but when that time comes, that time comes. But um, right now I can only control what I can control, and that's being the best version of myself on the field, so."

Surtain isn't worrying about his next contract just yet. Still, another record-breaking deal wouldn't be surprising given his consistent production.

Patrick Surtain II is remaining wary of Patrick Mahomes ahead of the season opener

The Broncos begin their season against division rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs. Their biggest concern will naturally be Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes is returning from injury, but Surtain isn't taking him lightly. The cornerback expects the quarterback to remain dangerous, even if he becomes more reliant on his passing.

That could actually play into Mahomes' strengths. Few quarterbacks are better than him when it comes to making plays from the pocket.

Stopping Mahomes will therefore be crucial for Denver. If Surtain and the defense can contain him, the Broncos could start their season with a statement victory.
