Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper was arrested last Friday morning following a physical fight with his girlfriend at his apartment. The argument began late Thursday night over allegations of cheating and quickly escalated, resulting in damage to both of their cellphones.

Parker Police responded to the incident and arrested Cooper on suspicion of criminal mischief with a domestic violence enhancer. His girlfriend was also arrested during the dispute. Following this, Cooper issued a public apology, posting verses from the bible on his personal Instagram account,

"I apologize to my family to my friends and my community ... And so many others.'' Cooper also added, "I realize posting a bible [quote] after something very serious happens does not just mean everything is okay.''

The Denver Post reports the police affidavit shows that the couple gave different accounts of what happened during the fight. Cooper's girlfriend claimed that he held her by her neck. On the other hand, Cooper told police that his girlfriend snatched his phone and threw it across the room.

He admitted to grabbing her upper arm and bracing his neck against hers to get his phone back, and he also threatened to break her phone if she did not leave his apartment. He later ended up damaging her phone.

Cooper appeared in court on Friday morning and was released on personal recognizance, meaning he did not have to pay bail. During a follow-up court hearing on Monday, he pleaded not guilty to the criminal mischief charge.

The legal process will continue with a motions hearing scheduled for July 6, and his jury trial is currently expected to begin on July 22.

What Bronocs Has To Say On Jonathon Cooper’s Arrest

Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper wants his legal case heard by a jury "as early as possible" to protect his football career, according to his lawyer, Harvey Steinberg. Steinberg confirmed Monday that the defense will not try to get the case thrown out.

The Broncos are monitoring the situation closely,

"We are aware of the matter and gathering more information." The team said in a statement as per reports from the ESPN.

Despite the ongoing legal issue, Cooper has been participating in the team’s offseason practices. The linebacker is entering his sixth year with Denver after being selected in the seventh round of the 2021 draft.

Cooper remains a vital piece of Denver's defense.  He signed a four-year, $60 million contract extension in 2024.

Last season, he recorded eight sacks, helping the Broncos set a brand-new franchise record with 68 total sacks.
