The offseason reset is underway for the Denver Broncos. As the team returned to the field for the first time since its AFC title game loss to the New England Patriots, one thing became clear. The Broncos did not trade for Jaylen Waddle without a plan.

Speaking to the media after the OTAs, head coach Sean Payton revealed that Denver had already identified how it wanted to use the former Miami Dolphins wide receiver before completing the blockbuster trade.

“There was a crystal clear vision before the trade as to, all right, this is what we see, this is where he plays and these are the things that we feel like he’s exceptional at,” Payton told the reporters. “And then let’s apply him to what we’re doing."

Since entering the league in 2021, Waddle has emerged as one of the NFL's most dangerous receivers. His speed, route-running, and ability to create yards after the catch set him apart.

Though the receiver has lined up in multiple positions throughout his NFL career, Payton confirmed that Denver views him primarily as an outside receiver.

“That’s where his home will be initially,” Payton said. “And there may be some packages where we have some flex, but he’s doing too well outside.”

His production records explain why the Broncos signed Waddle. Since entering the league as the No. 6 overall pick in 2021, Waddle has produced three 1,000-yard seasons, including a personal-best 1,356 yards and eight scores in 2022. Only 16 players across the NFL have matched that feat since 2021.

So, the urgency was clear. It was to add another explosive playmaker alongside Courtland Sutton and quarterback Bo Nix.

Early Reviews on Waddle Have Already Impressed Denver

Waddle is still working toward developing a rapport with Nix on the field as the offseason program continues. While Nix did not participate in OTAs, Waddle spent time building chemistry with backup quarterbacks Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger.

After the OTAs on Thursday, Payton shared his thoughts on how important it was to acquire a player like him.

"He had a good week," Payton said. "He's someone who picks things up real quick. He had a really good day yesterday, and you can just feel his instincts and his quickness. His ability to not only run fast but to stop fast."

Once Nix fully joins team drills, the Broncos will increase Waddle's workload during offseason activities. Waddle has also made a strong impression on receiver Courtland Sutton, who is entering his ninth season with the franchise.

"Being able to see him up close, he's a special dude," Sutton said after the OTAs. "He has tremendous speed. His speed and acceleration paired together are top tier. His understanding of the offense, his understanding of football, his run after the catch is top tier."

If Waddle becomes the playmaker they believe he can be, the trade could help turn a promising team into a legitimate AFC threat.
