Denver Broncos rookie RB Jonah Coleman has overcome family hardship on his way to the NFL. But one piece of advice from his father still stands out above everything else.
According to a profile by The Denver Post, Jonah became emotional while recalling a childhood conversation in Stockton, California.
“I don’t want you to be like me,” his father told him. “I want you to be way better.”
Jamon's words hit hard because Jonah understood the sacrifices his father made for the family.

Although Jamon wanted to look past what he had done and the people he was associated with, it wasn't that easy.
As reported by The Denver Post, he was encountered by a rival group. However, they were fascinated by Jamon's story of wanting to teach his son something 'different.'
Jonah had to experience those realities every day as a young athlete, but he used them as motivation. His father's message has become a constant reminder.
“Stockton is tough, man,” Jonah said Wednesday during the team’s minicamp. “It’s so easy to get wrapped up in whatever the h*** is going on around you."
That approach helped Jonah emerge as one of the country's most productive running backs. He started his college career at Arizona before coming to Washington.
Jonah finished his college career with more than 3,000 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns. His physical running style made him one of the most reliable backs in the nation.
The Broncos selected him in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The franchise views him as a player who could contribute in multiple situations.
While his father's advice shaped his outlook, it also helped form the habits that coaches now praise.
How Jonah's Upbringing Helped Prepare Him for the NFL
People around Jonah have often pointed to his maturity and work ethic. Those traits became noticeable long before he reached the professional level.
The running back has earned praise for how he treats everyone around him. That mindset reflects the lessons he learned growing up.
"It's just a respect thing … that's how I grew up and how my dad raised me, the first thing he talked to me about was respect. So, just showing respect to everybody and treat everybody the same, that's what I'm about," he said in a press conference, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
That attitude has already helped him make a positive impression in Denver. Coaches have praised both his character and football intelligence during the offseason program.
He rushed for 758 yards and 15 touchdowns during his final season at Washington. That production has helped Jonah build a strong resume.
The Broncos are looking to improve their backfield depth. At the centre of their depth, Jonah gives them another physical option as training camp approaches.
He still faces competition for playing time, but Denver believes he can prove his worth and find a role in the lineup. His combination of toughness and versatility fits what the coaching staff wants.
As Jonah begins his NFL career, his father's message remains close. It helped guide him from Stockton to the Broncos, and it continues to drive him forward today.
